There was nothing wrong with David's desire to build God a house. In fact, you could say it came from a good place. But God didn't need a house. He didn't need David to build him a house. That's not the way God relates to people: he doesn't need us to do things for him. Actually, in an unexpected turn, God says that he is going to build David a house.
