The concept of redemption is central to this story. Boaz's redemption of the land and marriage to Ruth preserve the family inheritance while providing Ruth and Naomi with security and a future. We see in the beginning Ruth's destitute situation as a widowed Moabite woman. Then she experiences the compassion and provision of God through Boaz, her kinsman-redeemer. The book of Ruth highlights the restoration of Naomi's life. She returns to Bethlehem "empty" and bitter, but by the end of the story, her life is filled with hope and joy again. What a beautiful picture of the ultimate redemption Christ offers to all believers through His sacrifice on the cross.

The story of Ruth stands as a story of redemption. Coming from tragedy and as a foreign woman, Ruth is the last person we might expect to see the goodness of God. She becomes a key figure in the story of the Bible and the great-grandmother of King David himself!
