Titus was a Gentile Christian and a trusted companion of Paul. He is mentioned thirteen times in the New Testament as an important and considerable help to Paul in his ministry. Titus was probably the man chosen to deliver the “tearful” or “severe” letter to the church in Corinth and would be the man who carried the letter of 2 Corinthians back to the city. The book of Titus is a letter sent from Paul about ten years later. Paul wanted to help Titus with some of the problems that had arisen in Crete. Paul’s words are strong instruction to Titus and may carry a similar “tone” to the lost letter he had written to the Corinthians. Titus enabled Paul to continue to minister to churches he was no longer able to visit personally, and he played an important role in the life of the early Christian movement.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
