Rooted and Grounded in Love

Do you ever struggle to love fellow Christians? Perhaps you even find it difficult to fathom the immense love Jesus has for you. While loving others may sometimes be a struggle, God strengthens us to love.

Paul wanted us to understand that while we are separated from God by our sin, we are reconciled to Him through the work of Jesus on the cross. Jesus took the punishment for the sins of all who believe in Him and repent. Now believers are forgiven, adopted as children of God, and saved by grace through our faith in Jesus.

Not only did God save the Jews who believed in Christ and repented, He saved the gentiles too. We are all one family, the church, united in Christ as one body in the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives each believer gifts of the Holy Spirit, which we use to serve and strengthen the body of Christ and share the gospel with others so that they, too, may be saved.

In Ephesians, Paul spends three chapters explaining the mystery of the gospel and the love of Jesus. Then, he pivots into another three chapters, explaining how we are to love others as Jesus loves us. This loving others is not an easy task. In fact, we need to wear spiritual armor to carry out our work for the Lord. So before Paul tells us how to live for Jesus, he prays for us. You can pray this prayer for yourself, for the believers in your life, and for the members of the church throughout the world.

Believers from all nations are joined together through Christ into one family of God. In his prayer, Paul asks God to strengthen each believer through the power of the Holy Spirit, with Christ dwelling in our hearts. And Paul asks God to help us to be like a tree with our roots firmly planted in love.

Pray: Father, I confess that sometimes it is hard to love my fellow believers. Yet Jesus paid the price for my sin and for theirs. He has united all believers from all nations throughout time into one body, His church. Help me to be strengthened through the Holy Spirit. Let Jesus dwell in my heart because of my faith in Him. Help me be rooted and grounded in love, so my love for others in Your church will bring glory to You forever.
