Give Me Wisdom and Knowledge

Have you ever played the game where you imagine being granted just one wish, and then you name the one thing you would wish for? It is a game that can make us feel clever, but it can also expose our hearts. After all, do we want material gain for our own use, or do we want to be equipped to steward our lives to the honor and glory of our wise God?

When David’s son, Solomon, became king of all of Israel, God came to him in the night and gave him the chance to expose his heart, telling Solomon to ask Him for whatever he wanted. In response, Solomon praised God for showing kindness to David and for making Solomon king after his father’s death. Then he asked for wisdom and knowledge so that he could lead God’s people well.

Rather than asking for wealth, possessions, honor, health, and longevity, or even revenge, Solomon asked for help in stewarding God’s people. For that reason, God gave Solomon wisdom and knowledge. Then, He promised to also give him immense wealth, possessions, and honor.

We do well to seek wisdom from God so we can understand His will for our lives. In fact, we need God’s wisdom just as we need the food we eat or the air we breathe.

Though none of us are governing a vast people group or stewarding the riches of a nation, we can still go to God and ask for His help to accomplish the tasks He puts before us. Whatever the Lord has called you to—whether it is marriage, parenting, ministering to others, or showing hospitality to your neighbors—He will equip you when you ask for wisdom and guidance. For God has given every believer a life and resources to steward wisely to His glory.

Pray: Wise Father, thank You for all You have given me to care for in my life. How can I steward those I am responsible for and the resources You have given me without the wisdom and knowledge that comes from You? Please give me wisdom that is better than gold and insight that is more precious than silver. Help me to live as one who is wise, making the most of every opportunity before You. Please give me discernment and knowledge from Your Word, so I will understand Your will.
