STUCK: Finances
In this world, it's easy to look around with a serious case of FOMO.
We compare ourselves to others, especially when it comes to finances. We see social media posts about fantastic vacations and new cars, kids heading off to fancy colleges, or friends buying new homes, and we feel left behind.
Comparison truly is a thief of joy.
If you are feeling stuck in your finances, let me get all in your business and ask: What are you willing to do about it?
Are you willing to take a Financial Peace University™ class to learn how to manage your finances better? Do you need to create a budget because you always have more month than money? Have you bought fancy, fun toys to keep up with the Joneses, only to find yourself drowning in debt?
You are not alone!
Money is just a tool. If we use it well, stewarding our income and outgo, it can be a blessing. If we haven't learned how to make our money work for us, if we didn't grow up with good financial role models, or we've made some mistakes, it's not too late to get unstuck in the area of finances.
Proverbs 13:11 reminds us to be the tortoise, not the hare. It says, whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow. (NIV)That's not how we want things to go, though. Most of us want overnight success, a sudden windfall, or a lottery ticket to come through.
Practical ways to untangle your finances may not be easy or enjoyable. You may need additional education on managing your finances effectively. You might have to sell some things until you can get back on your feet. There may be a season when you need to work multiple jobs. Friend, I've been in all of those places.
But once we started learning about how to manage our finances the Lord's way—living on less than we earn, paying off debt, creating a budget that works, and becoming radically generous—we got unstuck much faster.
You're not a lost cause. You're not too old or too young to start working through financial solutions. There is hope — but it will require action on your part.
What can you do today to start getting your finances back on track?
Prayer for finances: Lord, I have made some mistakes with my finances. Please forgive me and set my feet on the right path to do better. I recognize that I am just a steward of all that you have blessed me with – you are the Owner. Help me steward these blessings well so that I can be radically generous, pay off debt, save for my future, and leave a financial legacy that blesses the third and fourth generations, as you say a righteous person does. Thank you for your favor on my finances, in Jesus' name, amen!
