One Week in Prayer 10-Day Devotional on Building a Consistent Habit of Daily Prayer

DAY 8 OF 10

Sunday: Thanksgiving

Why I Am Always Grateful to God

Sundays are, for many of us, a time of worship, rest, and reflection. We gather in churches, hear God’s Word, and prepare for the week ahead. For me, Sundays are also a dedicated time to offer intentional thanksgiving to the Lord.

One of my favorite Bible accounts is the story of the ten lepers (Luke 17:11–19). All cried out to Jesus for mercy. He told them to show themselves to the priests, and as they obeyed, they were healed. Yet only one—a Samaritan—returned to give thanks. Jesus’ response was profound: “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” That one man not only received healing, but was made whole—completely restored, as though he had never been sick.

There’s a powerful lesson here: gratitude unlocks a deeper blessing. Healing changes your condition, but being made whole restores every part of you. I want to be whole—spirit, soul, and body—so I make thanksgiving a lifestyle, not an occasional act.

Reasons to Give Thanks

When I remember my past—my failings, my struggles, and how far God has brought me—I can only say, “Thank You, Lord.” Scripture tells us to “give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

I thank God for:

  • His goodness, mercy, and grace over my life.
  • The joy of salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
  • Strength to fulfill my purpose and serve His kingdom.
  • My family, friendships, and every answered prayer.
  • The privilege of another week to live, love, and lead well.

Like the one leper, I want to continually “return” to the Lord with praise, not just for what He has done, but for who He is.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Father, I thank You for life, health, and strength. Thank You for saving me and calling me Your own. Thank You for the blessings I see and those unseen. Thank You for guiding me through the past week and for the opportunities ahead. May my life continually reflect gratitude and worship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
