Listen at His Feet

Many have a tendency to run, trying to serve the Lord with everything they have, instead of hearing the heart of God saying, “I want to be with you. I want to talk with you. I want all of your attention.”

In Luke 10, we see that Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made while Mary planted herself at Jesus’ feet. When Martha couldn’t take it anymore, she asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. His response was not what she expected. Jesus remarked that Martha was worried and upset about many things that were not needed. Martha’s heart appears to serve the Lord, but Jesus quickly cuts to the root of her anxiety and points out that Mary has chosen what is better: being in His presence and listening at His feet.

Solitude is a place where you can sit at God’s feet like Mary, knowing that through Jesus, you are a child of God, not just a servant.

Prayer

Jesus, I want You. I want to sit at Your feet and learn from You. Teach me Your ways and teach me how to continue to choose the better thing—being with You. Amen.

Application

• As you seek the Lord today, remind yourself that you are a son or daughter. Meditate on your identity as an heir and a child of God.
• Ask the Lord to speak to you and posture yourself to listen at His feet. Remove all distractions, to-do lists, and prayer requests. Just receive whatever He has for you.
