WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

DAY 32 OF 61

The Day of the Lord

Have you ever stood in awe of a thunderstorm? The sky turns dark, the air feels heavy, and you know something big is coming. That’s the feeling Isaiah 13 gives. It’s a heavy chapter—a warning of God’s judgment coming down on Babylon, a powerful and prideful nation. God doesn’t hold back. The imagery is intense: stars don’t shine, the sun goes dark, and the heavens tremble. This is the “Day of the Lord”—a time when God steps in to set things right, even if it means tearing down.

It’s sobering. But it’s not the end of the story.

Fast forward to Acts 2. The scene is just as dramatic—tongues of fire, rushing wind, people speaking languages they’ve never learned. Peter stands up and quotes the prophet Joel: the very same “Day of the Lord” language—blood, fire, darkness, and signs in the sky. But this time, something different is happening.

Instead of judgment falling, the Holy Spirit is arriving. Instead of nations being destroyed, people from every nation are being invited in. Peter’s message is clear: yes, the Day of the Lord is still coming, but now there’s a way to be rescued. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:21, ESV)

Isaiah 13 reminds us that God is just. He won’t ignore pride, cruelty, or rebellion forever. But Acts 2 shows us God’s heart isn’t only justice—it’s mercy. He steps in not to judge the world, but to redeem it. And He does that by pouring out His Spirit, offering new life through Jesus.

These two passages, though hundreds of years apart, speak the same truth: God is in control. Nations rise and fall, people change, cultures shift—but God’s purpose never wavers. He is both powerful and patient, both just and full of grace.

So today, let these chapters remind you that we worship a sovereign God who doesn’t just shake the earth—He pours out His Spirit so that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:21, ESV)

About this Plan

WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

In this 17th installment of Reading with the People of God, we continue following a lectionary rhythm—Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms. This plan explores the prophetic voices of Micah, Habakkuk, and Isaiah, who confronted kings and warned of coming judgment while pointing to the hope of the Messiah. Alongside these, we'll read from the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, tracing the life of Christ and the birth of the Church. As we read these powerful passages in parallel, may the Spirit shape us and grow us in Christ together.
