WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

DAY 21 OF 61

When Justice Feels Delayed, and Truth Gets Twisted

Ever look around and feel like everything’s falling apart—and God’s not doing anything about it? That’s exactly where Habakkuk was. He looks at his own people and sees violence, injustice, and spiritual decay. And he cries out, “How long, O Lord?” (v. 2, NLT). He’s not doubting God’s power; he’s struggling with His timing. “Why do you idly look at wrong?” he asks (v. 3, ESV). It’s a bold prayer, but also an honest one.

Fast forward to Luke 20, and we see a different kind of brokenness—this time among the religious leaders. The Sadducees mock the idea of resurrection, turning eternal life into a joke (vv. 27–40). Then Jesus calls out the scribes for loving status and recognition while devouring widows’ houses (vv. 45–47). They look holy on the outside but are corrupt at the core.

So here’s the tension: injustice in the world, hypocrisy in the church, and God seems quiet. What do we do with that?

Here’s the best way I can answer: We trust the Word of God and the Christ it reveals. Jesus silences the Sadducees with Scripture, pointing to the resurrection, not as theory but as reality. “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” (v. 38, ESV). That’s our hope, too—God’s justice isn’t asleep, it’s coming. His silence isn’t absence—it’s patience. And His truth still speaks, even when it’s mocked, Thomas Brooks said: “God’s justice may be slow, but it is never asleep.”

That means every injustice, every lie, every false teacher, every act of violence—none of it is forgotten. Christ will deal with it all.

In the meantime, we wait, like Habakkuk. But we don’t wait in despair—we wait in faith. We cry out, yes—but we also lean in. We cling to the promise of resurrection, to the authority of God’s Word, and to the certainty that Christ is reigning and will return.

Prayer:
Lord, when the world feels upside down and truth is mocked, help us not lose heart. Remind us that You are just, You are alive, and You are coming again. Keep us anchored in Christ and in Your Word. In His name we pray, Amen.

About this Plan

WE SHALL NOT DIE - Reading With the People of God #17

In this 17th installment of Reading with the People of God, we continue following a lectionary rhythm—Old Testament, New Testament, and Psalms. This plan explores the prophetic voices of Micah, Habakkuk, and Isaiah, who confronted kings and warned of coming judgment while pointing to the hope of the Messiah. Alongside these, we'll read from the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, tracing the life of Christ and the birth of the Church. As we read these powerful passages in parallel, may the Spirit shape us and grow us in Christ together.
