Psalms 108 and 109 give us examples of how to lament, seek help, and cry out for justice before God. They serve as a model for how to quote Scripture to help us express our hearts before God. Psalm 108 is one of the latest psalms written as part of a national liturgy for worship in the Lord’s temple at Jerusalem, but verses 1-5 are actually direct quotes from Psalm 57, which David wrote in a cave while running for his life from King Saul. Verses 6-13 are direct quotes from Psalm 60, which David wrote when he was the king of Israel, seeking God’s help before going out into a battle in the midst of a national crisis.
