These are congregational hymns that were intended to lead the Israelite people in thanksgiving and repentance at three different nationwide pilgrimage festivals: Passover, the Feast of Tabernacles, and the New Year. At the New Year festival, after each “verse” was sung by a choir of priests in the temple, an assigned group of worshipers would come forward and sing the “chorus” to accompany their offerings thanking God for graciously delivering them from that kind of trouble.
