How To Stop Worrying

DAY 2 OF 5

Get Out of a Scary Stage When you’re wrestling with a fear, it feels like it’s going to last forever. Like—you’ll always be afraid to talk in front of a crowd, or of other people’s opinion of you, or of spiders! But guess what? Fear doesn’t have to last forever! (Okay, maybe the spiders one can stay forever.) If you think about it, there are probably a hundred things you used to be afraid of that you’re not afraid of anymore! Maybe you used to be afraid of the loud noise the toilet makes when it flushes. Or you used to be afraid to walk down a flight of stairs because each step was too big. Or you used to be afraid to get your face wet when you took a bath. You probably don’t think twice about those things anymore, though! Today, let’s look a little more closely at the Bible verse that is the anchor to this whole Bible Plan: Psalm 55:22. Check out this video. Pro tip: This video is using the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible. Maybe you’ll want to use that version for your Bible reading today, too! So, let’s go back to the title of today’s reading and ask this question: When you’re stuck in fear—how do you get out of that scary stage? * You remind yourself of Psalm 55:22 and tell yourself that the very first thing you should do when you feel your nerves awaken is to pray. Immediately give that fear to God in prayer. This can calm your spirit . * You take a very slow breath in and let it out very slowly, too. Breathe in for a count of eight, and breathe out for a count of eight. Repeat this a few times to help calm your body . * You think about things you’re thankful for. Focus on anything you can think of that is good in your life. Pray a prayer of thanks to God for the good things He’s given you. Maybe you can thank Him for a friend, for food, for family, for clothes, for the ability to shift your mind to what’s good, for sports, for music, for bubble gum! This can help to calm your mind . Ask yourself: How can I give my cares to God? What can I be thankful for to help my mind stop the cycle of fear and worry? Challenge yourself: Write Psalm 55:22 on a small piece of paper, and put it in the jar, box, or envelope you made yesterday. Whenever you’re struggling with a fear inside that “To God” container, read that Scripture again, pray, and put it back inside the container of worries you’ve given to God so it’ll be there when you need it next time! Pray: God, I have a lot to thank You for. But most of all, thank You that You’re with me right here, right now. Help me to remember that whenever my fears and worries try to make me feel too small and too alone. Thank You for helping me work through my fears so I don’t have to be afraid anymore. In Jesus’ name, amen.
