Jesus wraps up His sermon with some very sobering words. He reminds us that ultimately, a tree is identified by the fruit it produces. If a lemon tree stands tall in a yard claiming to be a cherry tree, it doesn’t really matter what the tree thinks…the lemons hanging off every branch tell everyone it is, in fact, a lemon tree. Jesus tells us that people are the same way. We can stand up tall and proclaim that we are Christ followers, but if our words and actions – the “fruit” that people see – paint a totally different picture, then perhaps we aren’t the type of “tree” we thought we were. These are tough things to evaluate in our own lives, but ask yourself this question: if I never told someone I followed Jesus, would they be able to tell anyway? As you read today, ask yourself these two questions: * What verse or phrase stood out to me the most? * What can I do with that in my life today?
