Jesus begins His most famous sermon with a series of quick statements that can seem very confusing at first glance (known as the Beatitudes). In each sentence, Jesus takes the typical understanding of how the world should work, and flips it on its head. If we follow Jesus, we are not to puff ourselves up and claw and scratch to be number one – we are to be humble, to serve others before ourselves, and to show mercy to those who don’t deserve it. Jesus comes right out the gate challenging our assumptions, and calling us to a better way of life. As you read today, ask yourself these two questions: * What verse or phrase stood out to me the most? * What can I do with that in my life today?
