Our Role as Branches

This conversation about the vine and the branches comes not long before Jesus is betrayed and crucified. It was a gift, really, to sustain those closest to him through the shock and confusion ahead. Jesus knew they would soon face a devastating reality—His physical absence. Their hopes for a triumphant Messiah would be shattered as He was led to the cross. Yet in this moment, Jesus assured them that their connection to Him was not bound by physical proximity.

Even as He prepared to leave them in body, He promised a connection that would remain strong and unbroken. Like a vine sustaining its branches, Jesus is the source of life, growth, and fruitfulness for all who trust in Him. Have you ever experienced a moment when life didn’t go as planned? When everything you anticipated seemed to crumble? Let’s be honest.

• People abandon us.
• Unexpected events leave us questioning if we’re truly seen or cared for.
• Life takes unexpected turns, leaving us empty and alone.

In these moments, we may feel disconnected, wondering if anyone is truly with us. But Jesus reminds us of His unwavering commitment. Even when we don’t sense His presence, Jesus sustains us. He doesn’t sever the connection when we falter.

He is committed to us—even when we fail to remain committed to Him.

He is close to us—even when He feels distant.

Just as Jesus urgently reminded His disciples that their connection to Him would remain strong, He wants you to know the same truth today: He will never leave you, and He will never fail to nourish and sustain you.

Remember, you don’t have to strive to bear fruit on your own; His life flowing through you will produce the flourishing He intends.
