About the Book of 1 Kings
1 Kings is a book about the Israelites. The Books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings tell us what happened after King David ruled Israel. Solomon became king after David. #1:0 The Israelites were the descendants of Jacob, who was also called Israel. Jacob's 12 sons became the ancestors of Israel's 12 tribes. The land that God gave to them as their home was called Israel. He built the first temple in Jerusalem.
After Solomon died, Israel became two kingdoms. The kingdom in the south was called Judah. Its capital city was Jerusalem. Rehoboam was the first king of Judah. The kingdom in the north was still called Israel. Its capital city was Samaria. #1:0 Samaria was a region of the country of Israel. It was a name for the Israelite kingdom in the north, also called Israel. Samaria was also the name of the capital city of Samaria. Jeroboam became king of Israel. See 1 Kings 12. There were many other kings who ruled after these two kings.
When the kings of Judah and Israel obeyed God, the people had peace. But sometimes the kings and the people did not obey God. They worshipped other gods instead. Then bad things happened. God sent a prophet to warn the people. His name was Elijah. He did miracles that someone could only do with God's help. He told the people that they must worship God.
