DAY FIVE: SERVING OTHERS “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, the servant of all.” – Mark 9:35, NIV LISTEN Imagine you are at the front of a long queue waiting your turn when suddenly, everyone in the queue turns around, and the people at the back go first! Jesus does exactly this in his kingdom. He makes the first, last, and the last, first. In our world, the greatest person is usually the one who has the most people serving him or her. In God’s kingdom, the greatest is the one who serves others (Mark 10:42-45). Don’t seek to be served, but rather to serve. LOOK John 13:1-17 LEARN Why should we serve others? · Because it’s love in action (v1)! · It benefits others – and in God’s kingdom, we exist for others. Jesus modelled it and told us to do it (v14-15) · God blesses us when we serve others (v17) · Jesus said that it is more of a blessing to give than it is to receive (see Acts 20:35). How should we serve people? We should serve people out of love (v1). Let’s remember who we are in Christ, and who Christ is in us. Knowing this enables us to humble ourselves before others. We should find practical, even lowly, ways of serving others (v 13:3-5). Where can you serve? Opportunities are everywhere at home, at school, at work, at church, in the community. Everyday tell God you are available to serve and then keep your eyes open for the opportunities he gives.
