Lowkey Legends

DAY 19 OF 36

This passage of scripture is widely known as “Mary’s Magnificat.” The word in Latin translates to “magnify” or “glorify,” and that truly is the heart and soul of this passage. Mary is singing this song of praise to God in response to the news that she would give birth to Jesus. Mary sets a beautiful example of how we should respond to the Lord’s work in our lives - with praise and exaltation. In verse 48, she first recognizes her humble estate in the world as a “lowly servant girl”. Her mind is blown that someone as lowly as her would be considered blessed for generations to come because of the Lord’s miraculous work. What an incredible reminder for us. There will be days when you feel less than or feel so lowly in the world, and it’s in those moments that we can recall Mary’s words and be reminded that God loves to exalt and use the lowly. Despite her position, despite her status, God uses her to bring the Savior of the world into human history. We can also be tempted to take credit for or recognition for the great things the Lord has done but Mary’s song gives us an example of how we should respond. In humility, we should praise the only one worthy of all praise. In all of it, though, the heart of Mary’s Magnificat seeks to bring God all of the glory, honor and praise. It’s not about Mary and her accomplishments, or her skills and abilities. It’s all about God, His goodness, His power, and His mercy.
