Cancer – Can We Trust God?Намуна

Trust Will Be Tested
There came a moment in my cancer journey when I genuinely thought I was done. My body had stopped responding. My immune system was collapsing. Every ounce of fight was gone. I wasn’t angry. I wasn’t bitter. I was simply empty. I remember lying in my hospital bed praying, “God, I can’t do this anymore. If You’re ready to take me home, I’m ready too.”
It was one of the most honest, vulnerable prayers I’ve ever prayed. No pretense. No performance. Just surrender.
I closed my eyes that night, thinking it might be my last. But the next morning, something changed. My nurse came in, almost shouting with excitement. “Jere, you’re back! Your numbers skyrocketed overnight!” My body, which had been fading, suddenly started to recover.
I was stunned. But more than that, I was transformed.
That moment didn’t just restore my physical health. It reshaped my understanding of trust. Because trusting God doesn’t always look strong. Sometimes, it looks like lying under the covers, whispering, “God, please carry me.” Trust isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s silent surrender.
Elijah experienced that same kind of breakdown in 1 Kings 19 (NIV). After calling down fire from heaven and defeating the prophets of Baal, you’d think his faith would be unshakable. But when Queen Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran, into the wilderness, into exhaustion, into despair. He collapsed under a broom tree and prayed, “I’ve had enough, Lord. Take my life.” (1 Kings 19:4 NIV)
God didn’t rebuke him. He didn’t shame him. He met him. Gently. Personally. He gave him rest. He sent an angel to provide food and water. And then He invited Elijah into His presence, not through a powerful wind or an earthquake, but through a gentle whisper.
Why? Because trust isn’t tested on mountaintops, it’s tested in valleys. And it’s often in the lowest moments that we discover God is nearest.
Psalm 34:18 (NIV) tells us that “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.” And Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV) that God’s power is perfected in our weakness. That’s the mystery of grace: we grow stronger not by pretending we’re okay, but by admitting when we’re not.
If you’re walking through something right now and you feel like your faith is failing, take heart. God is not looking for your strength; He’s offering you His. Trust doesn’t mean we never fall apart. It means we bring our broken pieces to the One who can restore them.
Action Step:
If you're weary today, don’t hide it. Come to God honestly in prayer. Tell Him where it hurts. Ask Him to meet you in the place of your exhaustion and give you His strength.
Reflection Questions:
- What does trusting God look like for you when you're running on empty?
- Have you experienced God’s nearness in a time of brokenness?
