Psalm 91: Supernatural Protection in Times of Anxiety

DAY 3 OF 5

FACING OPPOSITION AND ENEMIES

Psalm 91 paints vivid images of extreme security—poetic reminders of a protection that reaches far beyond what is immediate or physical.

Paul described it this way: his confidence was that, whether by life or by death, he would be delivered. What an incredible way to understand deliverance! Not as an “earthly accident insurance policy,” as some misread this psalm, but as a vision that transcends the here and now.

It has to be that way if we consider the kinds of enemies we face. Every one of them is orchestrated by the ultimate Enemy, in whom there is no good and whose power is real. Of course, we may find ourselves terrified by real dangers! Yet Psalm 91 proclaims that God’s power in Christ is greater than any threat.

Just as we sometimes pray wrongly—even with sincere faith—by focusing more on the mountain we want moved than on the One who has the power to move it, we can also face our struggles by giving more attention to our enemies than to the supernatural power at work in every believer (and sometimes, but not always, in our circumstances).

The One who is in us and for us is always greater. Faith isn’t about putting our trust in things or outcomes, but in who He is and in the source of the promise of safety Psalm 91 holds out to us. The power at work in us is nothing less than the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Against all odds and beyond all human logic, that reality gives us supernatural peace—peace that surpasses all understanding—even in the middle of adversity.

In Christ we are no longer victims, no matter what happens. We are more than conquerors. No earthly or spiritual force is stronger than our God, and His very name is committed to our good. Psalm 91 is an extraordinary declaration of that commitment.

Sometimes we’ll see it around us, here and now. Other times, even as we walk through—or fall into—the valley of the shadow of death, we will still find it to be true, though in a different way.

About this Plan

Psalm 91: Supernatural Protection in Times of Anxiety

Psalm 91 has, for centuries, been a place believers turn to for safety and protection in times of fear and anxiety. The world is a hostile place, and we are painfully aware of how small and fragile we are. But the psalmist reminds us that our God is greater than any danger. What remains is our choice: in the face of life’s realities, will we place ourselves under His wings—where we find true and lasting refuge?
