Relationships That Flourish: A 30-Day Devotional on Finding Security in Christ and Growing Healthy Connections

DAY 15 OF 30

Has a friend ever shared a story with you and then asked a follow-up question—only for you to realize you had no idea what they were talking about? We’ve all been there. In those moments, we realize we weren’t truly listening. Our minds were elsewhere, distracted by our own thoughts and worries, instead of offering the gift of presence to our friend. If we’re honest, many of us crave being heard and understood more than we desire to listen and understand those we love. In a world full of noise and distraction, deep, intentional listening is rare—but it is transformative. In our relationships, active listening means setting aside distractions, listening to understand rather than just to reply, noticing tone and body language, and asking questions before offering advice. This kind of listening shows love and respect to others and reflects Christ’s care for people.

James also urges us to listen attentively to what matters most— the Word of God. He warns that hearing without doing is like glancing in a mirror and then forgetting our reflection. When we receive God’s Word with humility and allow it to shape us, we are transformed to live in ways that please Him. Listening to God means slowing down enough to hear His truth, meditating on His Word, and letting it take root in our lives. When we respond to trials and suffering in faith and obedience, James assures us that “we will be blessed in our doing”. Having curiosity about what God might say is a treasure, and practicing this posture before God and our relationships with others will have lasting impacts on our lives.

Listening well isn’t always easy, but we have faith in the one who teaches us to do so. We are empowered by the Spirit who first listened to our cries for mercy and who continues to meet us with patient, attentive love. Our active listening becomes both a response to God’s love for us and a witness of His love to others.

Reflect: How did Jesus model active listening in His relationships with others? How does His example shape the way you listen today?

Pray: Lord, thank You that You are a God who listens to me with patience and love. Help me to listen well to those You’ve placed in my life, bringing encouragement, healing, and a reflection of Your love.
