Designed for communion
Have you ever considered what’s happening in your brain when you pray? Neuroscientists have. And what they’ve discovered is just beautiful and nothing short of shouting the goodness of our God.
Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that intentional, focused prayer changes the brain. When we engage in prayer, the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making, becomes more active. At the same time, activity decreases in the amygdala, which is the brain’s fear centre. Studies have also shown that when we regularly pray, our blood pressure decreases, we regulate our emotions more effectively, and our immune system response improves. These studies compare praying Christians with Buddhist monks and individuals committed to a meditative lifestyle. All results demonstrate that praying to Jesus has the greatest impact.
The very thing God calls us to do – pray without ceasing, cast our cares on Him, draw near – is also the very thing that brings healing and health to our bodies and minds. This is not self-help. This is divine help. A creator who formed your innermost being also formed the blueprint for your healing – and it starts with communion.
So if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or tired, remember that prayer isn’t just something you do for God. It’s a gift God gave you for your flourishing.
