John 14 | Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?

Well, of course, Philip did know him. He knew him as his friend, his master, his Rabbi – he knew him as teacher and healer, as deliverer and miracle worker. He knew him as the one who forgave sins, and who fed the hungry, the one who touched the untouchable leper. Of course, he knew him, he had accompanied him for three years, he had left everything to follow him, he had been with him day and night since the beginning – (John’s gospel says he was the first disciple Jesus called and said “follow me”) hadn’t Philip gone straight to Nathanael and said “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth.” Yes, Philip knew him, indeed, who knew Jesus better? Few. But Philip still had more to learn, more to see, more to know, more to understand of who this Jesus is. Even when we have been with him ‘for such a long time’, there is always more for us to know of Jesus, for us to grow in our understanding and our experience of him. And it’s what Jesus wants for each of us; through his Word of Scripture, through his gifts and graces in the community of the Church, by the matchmaking of the Holy Spirit, there is so much more to know and enjoy and celebrate.
