Stewardship of Creation

DAY 5 OF 5

Trustworthy renters

Have you seen a rented house that wasn’t looked after? When a tenant rents a house, they don’t own it, they’re just borrowing off the landlords. The landlords are trusting that their property will be enjoyed and that it will be returned to them in great condition when the tenant leaves.

When God created the world, He entrusted it to Adam and Eve to manage it responsibly. He gave us humans stewardship over creation to ensure it’s used well and sustained for the benefit of future generations. This means the careful management of resources in creation; not only the beautiful environment around us, but also our bodies, our children, our gifts and our resources. I wonder what it would look like if we were good stewards of these things that God has created? When God gives us good things, it’s tempting to think they’re then ours to use or abuse. But what if we were mindful that this creation isn’t ours, it’s God’s? Perhaps we wouldn’t misuse and discard His creation so easily.

In heaven we’ll be blessed with God’s new and perfect creation, but until then He’s entrusted us with His earthly creation. In light of that, how will we steward our time, treasure, resources, bodies and the environment around us to better serve God and others here on earth?
