Gideon - From Fear to Victory

DAY 1 OF 8

Day 1 – The Calling

Scripture:
Judges 6:11–27

Devotional:
Gideon’s story begins in weakness, not strength. He is threshing wheat in a winepress, trying to stay hidden from the Midianites. This is a picture of fear and survival, not victory and courage. Yet into that setting the angel of the Lord appears, declaring words that must have sounded ridiculous to Gideon: “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valour.”

God’s word does not describe us as we see ourselves—it defines us as He sees us. Gideon was no hero in that moment, but God already saw the deliverer he would become. In the same way, Jesus renamed Simon as “Peter” the rock, long before Simon had the stability or faithfulness to live up to that name. God calls things that are not as though they are (Romans 4:17).

Our past does not disqualify us, and our present weakness does not limit God. Where we see fear, God sees faith waiting to awaken. Where we see insignificance, God sees His Spirit waiting to move. Gideon questioned why bad things had happened to Israel, but the angel didn’t answer him. Often God doesn’t respond to our questions as we may expect but rather He redirects our focus, not because He is avoiding the question but because He wants our focus on what really matters. We may never understand why things have happened but we can always seek God for the answer to the situation we are in.

Reflection:
Will I allow my situation to define me or will I turn to God’s word to tell me who I really am, even when it contradicts how I see myself?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to believe that I am what You say I am, not what fear or failure has declared me to be. Let your word come to me through the scriptures and through the voice of the Holy Spirit. Fill me with faith to believe you over all else.
