30-Day Open Door Prayer Challenge

DAY 14 OF 30

The Second Call to Open

GOD’S WORD

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.”Psalm 24:9 KJV

Some doors do not open on the first knock because some breakthroughs require persistence. When David repeats this call in Psalm 24, summoning the gates of Jerusalem to lift a second time, it is not because he was ignored the first time. It is a picture of holy insistence of faith that refuses to quit until the presence of God is made known.

Think of it: David had already declared in Psalm 24, verse 7, “Lift up your heads, O you gates!” Yet here in verse 9, the summons rises again. Why? Because some gates are ancient, some barriers are thick, and some victories require more than one prayer, more than one act of courage, more than one opening of the heart. Persistence is not a sign of weakness; it is a mark of faith.

Scripture tells us, “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 KJV). Jesus Himself urged us to keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking (Matthew 7:7–8 KJV). Paul reminds us, “Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9). The second call in Psalm 24 reminds us that repetition is sometimes the path to revelation.

And we are not without examples. Abraham persisted in prayer, interceding repeatedly for Sodom (Genesis 18:23–33). Moses persevered, pleading with God to spare Israel after their rebellion (Exodus 32:31–32; Deuteronomy 9:25–29). Hannah poured out her soul year after year, weeping and asking the Lord for a son (1 Samuel 1:10–11). And David himself confessed, “I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry” (Psalm 40:1). Their persistence was not wasted; each discovered that God responds in His time to persevering faith.

If you are standing before what feels like an ancient, old, or stubborn iron gate-like situation, whether praying for a loved one, for provision, for healing, or for a breakthrough, do not give up. Extraordinary encounters with God and extraordinary fruit through Him often come on the other side of persistent prayer. The second, third, or tenth prayer is not wasted breath; it is the steady hand on the latch, the repeated summons that says, “King of glory, I will not stop until You come in.”

Soul Check

  • Where have you grown weary in prayer for a door to open?
  • What would persistence look like for you today, another prayer, another fast, another small act of faith?

Prayer
Faithful Lord, strengthen me when I grow weary. Teach me to persist in prayer, even when the gates seem heavy and unmoved. Give me courage to ask again, boldness to knock again, and endurance to keep believing. Let me reap the harvest You have promised in due season, and let every open door declare that You alone are the King of glory. Amen.
