Fear Not! A Guide to Living a Fearless Life

DAY 9 OF 30

Light Dispels Darkness

“But He stands alone, and who can oppose Him? He does whatever he pleases. He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans He still has in store. That is why I am terrified before Him; when I think of all this, I fear Him. God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me. Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face” (Job 23:13-17, NIV).

Job was one of the greatest men on the face of the earth during his time. “He was the greatest man among all the people of the East” (Job 1:3, NIV). Job had great wealth, but he also had a great passion for the Lord.

So do great men of faith have doubts? If you lose your ten children and most of your wealth in a single day, you are bound to have doubts.

Another great Bible hero had his doubts as well. Is it possible that Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, had doubts? Jesus said of John, “I tell you the truth: among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11, NIV).

John the Baptist was the one who baptized Jesus and heard the voice from God Himself call from heaven and say, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17, NIV). However, after John was imprisoned by Herod, he had a lot of time to reflect and did have some doubts of his own. So much so that he sent his own disciples to Jesus to ask Him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Luke 7:20, NIV) How does one go from being the greatest man born of women to doubting who Jesus was?

The Reverend Tom Cutts gave a message in 2009 titled, “Don’t doubt in the dark what God has spoken to you in the light.” John the Baptist had already heard the actual audible voice of God speaking of His Son. But John, in that dark point in his life, let doubt creep into his thoughts. The moral of Reverend Cutts’ message is, whatever God has revealed to you in the light, don’t let the darkness overshadow the truth.

We are all going to have occasions where we doubt and question God. Job did, John did, and you will too. So the question becomes, how do you deal with your doubts? John the Baptist has already shown you; he asked questions. God doesn’t mind questions, even the tough ones. He knows that the truth will set you free.

Here are some spiritual truths you can always count on: light dispels darkness, truth dispels lies, faith dispels fear, and good dispels evil.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, help me to be cognizant that the enemy will always be sowing seeds of doubt. When I have those doubts, I pray I will go right to the source who can dispel them — You. In Jesus name, amen.
