IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faith

DAY 6 OF 8

The E in IMPRESS is for Experiences

Today, we’re reflecting on Luke 22:7–20, where Jesus shares the Passover meal with His disciples. A moment steeped in tradition and rich with spiritual meaning.

In this passage, Jesus and His disciples participate in the Passover, a key Jewish festival that remembers God’s powerful rescue of His people from slavery in Egypt. Each element of the meal, like the bread and the cup, helped retell the story of God’s deliverance and his enduring faithfulness.

But during this meal, Jesus does something remarkable. He redefines the symbols of the Passover, giving them a new and deeper significance. The bread becomes His body, given for us. The cup becomes the new covenant in His blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins. What was once a remembrance of God’s past rescue becomes a vivid experience of the rescue that is to come through Jesus Himself.

This moment invites us, as parents, to consider how we pass on faith. Words and teaching are essential, but experiences - those that touch the senses and stir the heart - often leave the deepest impressions. Just as Jesus used the tangible bread and wine to convey spiritual truths, we too can help our children experience God through what they see, hear, taste, touch, and smell.

Think about how you might weave these sorts of experiences into your family’s rhythms. Bake bread while talking about Jesus, the Bread of Life. Share a special meal and reflect on the Last Supper. Use everyday objects to bring Bible stories to life. These experiences anchor truth in memory and make faith feel real.

Action

For You

Reflect on a moment in your life when you truly experienced God - through an answered prayer, a quiet moment of peace, or an unexpected provision. Take time today to thank Him for that experience and what it taught you about His presence.

With Your Kids

This week, create a hands-on, sensory-rich activity that connects to a Bible story or spiritual truth. You might bake bread while discussing Jesus’ sacrifice, recreate a simple version of the Last Supper, or do a craft based on a favourite verse. Engage their senses to make faith not just something they know but something they feel and remember.

About this Plan

IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faith

We find the word Impress in Deuteronomy 6, where Moses urges God’s people to pass on faith to the next generation. Based on her book Impress, Ainsley Freeman invites us in this reading plan to rediscover how we can leave a lasting faith legacy for our kids. Even in today’s busy homes, we can share God’s story in relevant and engaging ways. Using IMPRESS as an acronym, this plan outlines seven practical principles to help you make passing on faith a clear and compelling priority in your home.
