The Cross: Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

DAY 1 OF 5

What Really Happened on the Cross?

Key Question: Was the Cross God punishing Jesus…or something deeper?

You might’ve heard something like this: “You’re bad. God’s mad. Jesus took the punishment.” It’s been repeated so much that many assume that’s what Christianity is all about.

But what if that’s not what was happening at all?

The Cross isn’t about a Father lashing out at His Son. It’s about the fullness of God—Father, Son, and Spirit—entering into our brokenness, absorbing the worst of human violence, fear, and shame, and disarming it with love.

This wasn’t a transaction. It was a revolution—one that revealed God’s heart, healed our story, and launched the renewal of all things.

N.T. Wright writes:

“The cross is the surest, truest, and deepest window on the very heart and character of the living and loving God.”
The Day the Revolution Began, p. 44

The Cross isn’t where we see God's wrath against Jesus—it’s where we see God’s love in Jesus, refusing to retaliate. Choosing forgiveness. Revealing a new way to be human.

This wasn’t divine child abuse. This was co-suffering love. And it changes everything.

Prayer

Jesus, if I’ve misunderstood who You are, show me. If I’ve projected my fears onto God, heal me. Open my eyes to the Cross not as punishment, but as love that endures, forgives, and restores. Amen.

Today’s Questions
