Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

DAY 4 OF 6

God’s Word and Butter Tea

Not only does creation point our hearts to God, but God’s Word shows us who He is as well. The Bible gives us a chance to know who God is and how much He loves us.

In Psalm 19, David gives seven examples of how God’s Word displays His character just as nature does:

The law of the Lord is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.
Psalm 19:7-9, NIV

David says that God’s Word is perfect, trustworthy, right, radiant, pure, firm, and righteous! And because we know that John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (NIV), we know that those seven words also describe the Lord! So when you experience the Bible’s trustworthiness and purity, its righteousness and radiance, its firmness and perfection, you are saying that God is also trustworthy and pure, righteous and radiant, firm and perfect. They can’t be separated!

If you ever go to faraway villages in the Himalayas, you will for sure be offered one of their traditional drinks: butter tea! It’s made from tea, salt, and yak butter! When I think of my time trekking through these incredible villages, I think of sweet moments huddled with friends around the fire with butter tea in our cups. I learned that you can’t have the Himalayas without butter tea, and you can’t have butter tea without the Himalayas! Butter tea reflects the people who offer it—warm and welcoming.

It’s the same thing with God’s Word. When you read God’s Word, you can’t help but learn more about who God is!

  • As a family: What are some things that always go together? When you think of one thing, the other is right there with it?
  • Need a hint? For me, summertime and lake days are the same! I can describe them both as fun, carefree, and filled with family time!

About this Plan

Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

Did you know that you can learn about our amazing God whoever you are and wherever you go? The world around us teaches us about who He is. So does the Bible, which we call God’s Word. This week we’re going to read a whole chapter of God’s Word so we can learn what it means to see God in the world around us and the Word in front of us.
