Day 18: Listen Well, Live Well:
Today is all about the power of the tongue—what we say, how we listen, and where we run when life gets loud.
Listening well isn’t just polite—it’s wise. Proverbs 18 reminds us that how we listen, how we speak, and where we run for safety are all crucial to living a life rooted in God’s wisdom.
One of the clearest marks of foolishness is an unwillingness to listen. Proverbs 18:2 (NIV) says: "Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions."
When we’re more interested in speaking than understanding, we close ourselves off from growth. Listening isn’t weakness—it’s strength. It’s the gateway to learning, empathy, and maturity. Wisdom leans in to hear, while foolishness rushes to be heard.
But Proverbs 18 doesn’t just highlight how we listen—it shows us where to run when life gets overwhelming. Proverbs 18:10 (NIV) offers this beautiful promise: "The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."
We don’t have to build our own towers of self-protection. When fear, uncertainty, or hardship strike, we have a place to run—God Himself. The righteous don’t walk casually toward Him; they sprint to His name, knowing it’s the only sure refuge.
Finally, Proverbs 18 circles back to one of the most powerful tools we possess: our words.
Proverbs 18:21 (NIVUK) reminds us: "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Words create atmospheres. They either speak life, encouragement, and hope—or they tear down, discourage, and destroy. What you say not only shapes others—it shapes you. The fruit you eat tomorrow will come from the seeds you’re speaking today.
At its heart, Proverbs 18 calls us to a life of wisdom marked by eager listening, trusting in God’s protection, and speaking words that give life.
