Change My Mind - Standing With Jesus in a Confusing World

DAY 5 OF 7

Flirting with Culture

The world we live in is not the Kingdom of God. People have chosen to walk away from His design and make their own version of truth. But it doesn’t stop there—our culture is actively opposed to God’s Kingdom. Whether it’s identity, beauty, life, or purity, almost every value celebrated in our culture is opposite to God’s truth.

Everything we consume is laced with these ideologies.

Your favorite Netflix show? It’s guaranteed to include a non-binary or LGBTQ+ character, or even scenes involving séances or Ouija boards.

Your music? It likely glorifies unhealthy views of sex, body image, or materialism.

The reality is, you cannot avoid it. If you’re serious about following Jesus, then this culture is like junk food to your spiritual health—it’s toxic. And yet, so many of us believe the lie: “I consume it, but it doesn’t affect me.”

But here’s the truth:

You can know a Big Mac is unhealthy, but if you keep eating it, the knowledge alone won’t stop it from adding kilos.

The closer you let culture get to your heart, the more power it has to sway you.

The Slippery Slope

This isn’t a new problem. God warned His people about it long ago. When the Israelites were entering the Promised Land, He gave them a clear command:

"Do not intermarry with [the other nations]. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters, for they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods."

God knew that even a small compromise would lead to big consequences. A tiny cut can lead to a large infection.

But the Israelites didn’t listen. And over time, they allowed opposing cultures to influence them, leading them away from God. The story of King Solomon is a perfect example:

"The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, ‘You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.’ Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. In Solomon’s old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God."

Solomon’s compromise didn’t just affect him—it led to the downfall of the entire nation. The Israelites lost the Promised Land and were taken into exile for 70 years.

The Lesson for Us

The closer you let something opposed to God’s truth get to your heart, the more it will pull you away from Him.

It’s time to take a hard look at your relationship with culture:

What are you consuming?

What values are you allowing into your heart?

God is calling you to stand firm, to be set apart. The world’s culture is like a slow poison—it may seem harmless at first, but over time, it can destroy your faith.
