Just Like Dad - God's Attributes in Us

DAY 1 OF 3

Have you ever had that terrifying moment where you realize you’re just like your Parents? Maybe it’s the way you laugh, the way you react, or even how you look. For me, it was when I saw an old home video of my Dad.

There are good things I’ve inherited from my parents, but let’s be real—it’s a bit awkward to notice those similarities sometimes. How we view someone makes a big difference. If I admire my dad, I might want to embrace the things that remind me of Him. But if I don’t, I’m more likely to avoid them.

The same is true for how we view God. Our relationship with Him is often shaped by how we see our earthly fathers:

If my dad was angry, God must be mad at me.

If my dad let me down, I can’t trust God.

If my dad was distant, God must be cold and uninvolved.

Sometimes, we project our mixed feelings about our earthly dad onto our Heavenly Father. That can lead us to focus on Jesus and the Holy Spirit but ignore God the Father altogether:

Jesus? Great—He loves me and died for me.

The Holy Spirit? Awesome—He empowers me.

God the Father? Distant, cold, and maybe even unapproachable.

But the truth is, God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three in one. Each reflects the same love, power, and presence.

God sent Jesus to give us a perfect example of His nature. Jesus Himself said:

"I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does."

Everything we see in Jesus comes from God the Father. His compassion, His kindness, His authority—all of it is a reflection of God. Likewise, the Holy Spirit’s power and presence flow from the Father.

If we have a broken or negative view of God the Father, it can hold us back:

It can make it harder to be like Jesus.

It can make us hesitant to be open to the Holy Spirit.

But when we see God the Father for who He really is - a loving, approachable, and perfect parent—it transforms how we follow Jesus and how we experience the Holy Spirit.

Take a moment to think about how you see God the Father. Are there fears, hurts, or misconceptions shaping your view of Him? If so, ask Him to reveal the truth about who He is.

God is not distant. He’s not cold. He’s not unapproachable. He’s the Father who loves you perfectly, leads you faithfully, and wants to know you personally.

Prayer

“God, I want to know You as my Father. Help me let go of any wrong views or hurts that keep me from trusting You. Show me who You really are and help me to see Your love in every part of my life. Amen.”

Let today be the day you embrace the Father’s love and trust Him with your heart.
