The Gospel of John

DAY 21 OF 30

Hope that no one can take away.

In this powerful passage, Jesus stands before the tomb of His friend Lazarus and commands, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43). And the impossible happens—Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, walks out alive. With this miracle, Jesus doesn’t just display His power; He confirms His identity: “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). He holds authority over death itself, offering eternal life to all who believe in Him.

But right after this incredible moment, opposition rises sharply. The religious leaders begin plotting to kill Jesus. Isn’t it striking? Right after a miracle, the pressure intensifies. The joy of resurrection is followed by the shadow of betrayal and death.

Many of us have experienced something similar. Right after a breakthrough comes a setback. You get a job promotion, but your health suddenly takes a hit. You celebrate a milestone, but also face a deep loss. These moments can leave us confused and weary.

Jesus understands. The same voice that called Lazarus out of the grave would soon be silenced on the cross. He knows what it feels like to experience both joy and pain in the same breath. But He also knows the bigger picture. His path to the cross wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of eternal life for all who believe.

When life takes a sharp turn from celebration to sorrow, don’t lose heart. The same Jesus who raised Lazarus is with you in your pain. He doesn’t promise a life free from trouble, but He does promise victory over death, and hope that never fades.

Respond to God’s Word:

Take a few moments today to thank Jesus for the eternal life He offers. Even in the middle of pain, praise Him for the hope that cannot be taken away. Then call or text someone who might need encouragement. Remind them that Jesus is the resurrection and the life—and because of Him, we always have hope, no matter what we’re facing.
