Where to Give? A Biblical Framework to Help You DecideНамуна

Day 1: The Two Hearts of Giving
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by all the worthy causes asking for support? As your capacity to give increases, so do the opportunities. And saying no—even when necessary—can feel uncomfortable.
A few years ago I heard a preacher discussing a simple framework that transformed how I approach giving decisions: Give from a grateful heart and a broken heart.
Let’s start with the first part.
Giving should flow from gratitude.
In the Old Testament, the Israelites brought their first fruits as an offering of thanksgiving—an acknowledgment that everything they had came from God.
This principle still applies today.
What organizations, ministries, or people are you genuinely thankful exist? Which ones have blessed you personally?
For many, their local church tops this list.
The ministry that feeds your family spiritually week after week deserves your faithful support.
But your list might also include a crisis pregnancy center that helped a loved one, or a Christian camp that impacted your children.
Now onto the second part:
Giving should flow from what breaks you.
Jesus was repeatedly "moved with compassion" before He acted.
What injustices make your blood boil? What vulnerable populations keep you up at night?
For some, it's human trafficking. For others, it's evangelism in unreached areas. The point isn't what breaks your heart, but that you're allowing your heart to be broken by things that break God's heart.
When these two hearts align—gratitude and compassion—you discover your unique giving sweet spot.
Let's pray: Father, thank You for Your abundant provision in my life. Help me to give from both gratitude and compassion. Show me the specific areas where You've made my heart responsive to needs around me. Guide my giving to align with Your purposes.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
