David, a Man After God’s Heart

DAY 15 OF 24

An eternal kingdom

“When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.” (2 Samuel 7:12)

God promised David that after his death, his offspring would become king. Of course, that was good news for David and his family, as well as for the people of Israel. But this promise goes further than David’s literal son and grandsons. Read for example verse 16: “Your throne shall be established forever”.

Although David’s descendants reigned for many generations, their throne does not exist anymore. So, how are we to interpret this promise?

In Luke 1 we read that Jesus Christ was a descendant of David. He is the ultimate “Son of David” and His reign will never end. His throne in heaven shall be established forever. And although His rule is only partially visible on earth now, it will be all-encompassing in the new earth.

In the last chapter of the Bible, Revelation 22, Jesus describes Himself as “the descendant of David, the bright morning star”. And with the words of the Lord’s Prayer we worship Him: “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.”

Is Jesus the king of your life? What does this mean to you? What do you find difficult and what do you appreciate about Jesus’ kingdom?
