Find & Follow Jesus, Quarter 2

DAY 19 OF 91

Devotional:

“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” Judges 6:13

Let’s be honest. We all struggle with doubt in our faith at some point in our lives. It comes up when we struggle to see how God is at work in our needs or the lives of others. It comes up when bad things happen to good people or when we see so many people impacted by disasters around the world.

There is a lot of talk about deconstructing our faith these days. While we’ve put a label to it, this has been happening since the beginning of time. We have lived with doubt since the garden of Eden. Even Jesus came to deconstruct the Jewish religion that had become so burdened with laws and rituals.

So doubt is natural. And God is big enough to handle our doubt. What is imperative is that we follow our doubt with prayers for God to reveal His truth and wisdom as He rebuilds our faith or addresses our doubts. Without that step and without an authentic community that loves us as we wrestle with doubt, we often end up losing our faith altogether.

Prayer:

God wants to hear and address our doubts. Gideon was honest with the angel of the Lord about his doubts, and you’ll notice that God answers those doubts with a promise in verse 16. Take a moment as you pray to tell God about the hard questions and doubts you struggle with. Ask Him to give you His wisdom and to lead you to truth, and then watch for how God starts to answer those questions or reassure you like He did for Gideon.

About this Plan

Find & Follow Jesus, Quarter 2

Follow our quarterly plans to read through the entire Bible in one year, plus a bonus round through the Gospels and Romans. Each day, we encourage you to read the sections from both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and then set aside some time to write down, journal, or memorize the first posted verse from each day. Every week we provide an additional devotional for further discussion on that week's themes.
