 <div class="label">1</div><div class="p"> 1Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.</div><div class="p"> 4But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. 7And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 8Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 9And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. 10Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.</div><div class="p"> 11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you. 13Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. 14Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. 15So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. 16Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.</div><div class="s2">The Prophet's Prayer</div><div class="p"> 17Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.</div>

Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey. 4And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.</div><div class="p"> 5So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. 6For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: 8but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. 9Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?</div><div class="p"> 10And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.</div>

Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. 3Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. 4Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? 5So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.</div><div class="p"> 6And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. 7But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. 8And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.</div><div class="p"> 9And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. 10Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: 11and should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s2">God's Soldier and Workman</div><div class="p"> 1Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. 5And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. 6The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. 7Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. 8Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 10Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 12if we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 13if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.</div><div class="p"> 14Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymen&#230;us and Philetus; 18who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. 19Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 20But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 21If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 22Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.</div>

 <div class="label">26</div><div class="q1"> 1As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest,</div><div class="q2">So honour is not seemly for a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 2As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying,</div><div class="q2">So the curse causeless shall not come.</div><div class="q1"> 3A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass,</div><div class="q2">And a rod for the fool's back.</div><div class="q1"> 4Answer not a fool according to his folly,</div><div class="q2">Lest thou also be like unto him.</div><div class="q1"> 5Answer a fool according to his folly,</div><div class="q2">Lest he be wise in his own conceit.</div><div class="q1"> 6He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool</div><div class="q2">Cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.</div><div class="q1"> 7The legs of the lame are not equal:</div><div class="q2">So is a parable in the mouth of fools.</div><div class="q1"> 8As he that bindeth a stone in a sling,</div><div class="q2">So is he that giveth honour to a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard,</div><div class="q2">So is a parable in the mouth of fools.</div><div class="q1"> 10The great God that formed all things</div><div class="q2">Both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors.</div><div class="q1"> 11As a dog returneth to his vomit,</div><div class="q2"> So a fool returneth to his folly.</div><div class="q1"> 12Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?</div><div class="q2"> There is more hope of a fool than of him.</div><div class="q1"> 13The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way;</div><div class="q2">A lion is in the streets.</div><div class="q1"> 14 As the door turneth upon his hinges,</div><div class="q2">So doth the slothful upon his bed.</div><div class="q1"> 15The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom;</div><div class="q2">It grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.</div><div class="q1"> 16The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit</div><div class="q2">Than seven men that can render a reason.</div><div class="q1"> 17He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him,</div><div class="q2"> Is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.</div><div class="q1"> 18As a mad man who casteth firebrands,</div><div class="q2">Arrows, and death,</div><div class="q1"> 19So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour,</div><div class="q2">And saith, Am not I in sport?</div><div class="q1"> 20Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out:</div><div class="q2">So where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.</div><div class="q1"> 21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire;</div><div class="q2">So is a contentious man to kindle strife.</div><div class="q1"> 22The words of a talebearer are as wounds,</div><div class="q2">And they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.</div><div class="q1"> 23Burning lips and a wicked heart</div><div class="q2"> Are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.</div><div class="q1"> 24He that hateth dissembleth with his lips,</div><div class="q2">And layeth up deceit within him;</div><div class="q1"> 25When he speaketh fair, believe him not:</div><div class="q2">For there are seven abominations in his heart.</div><div class="q1"> 26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit,</div><div class="q2">His wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.</div><div class="q1"> 27Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein:</div><div class="q2">And he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.</div><div class="q1"> 28A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it;</div><div class="q2">And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.</div><div class="b"></div>
