THE CONFESSION: INTO THE LIGHT
Welcome to Step Five. This part calls us to take an extraordinarily vulnerable step: to confess the exact nature of our wrongdoings to God, ourselves, and at least one other person. It’s a simple step to describe but a profoundly difficult one to put into action. This step requires us to move beyond hiddenness, bringing our failures and fears into the light. Sounds fun, right?
The thought of being fully known can be terrifying. Our natural inclination is to protect our image, to hide behind appearances, and to avoid the risk of exposure. Yet, the power of this step lies precisely in that risk. As one writer put it, “We don’t need a cure; we need a witness.” A witness doesn’t advise or fix us but simply hears our story, offering the healing gift of being seen and accepted.
In Scripture, we see this truth beautifully in the story of a woman who was known as a sinner. She poured out her love for Jesus in front of others, weeping and anointing His feet. Her vulnerability didn’t bring condemnation—it brought forgiveness, honor, and peace. She stepped into the light, and the light set her free.
Confession isn’t about shame; it’s about liberation. Shame thrives in darkness, but it withers in love’s presence. When we take this step, the terrible weight of guilt and isolation begins to lift, replaced by healing, clarity, and grace.
TODAY'S INVITATION:
Begin praying for the willingness to confess. Ask God to help you face any resistance with curiosity and courage. Reflect on what freedom might feel like if there was nothing hidden in your life. When you’re ready, consider who might serve as your witness—a trusted friend, mentor, or spiritual guide who can hear your confession with grace and love.
