The best is yet to come

'Are we there yet?’ The refrain from the back seat is seemingly endless. Boredom has set in and as the road winds on and on, it seems that the eventual, expected destination is nothing more than a myth. Finally, the back seat spots a familiar landmark, and they realise that the endless journey is about to end. Who will be the first to spot the ocean? The game changes. The time of suffering eternal boredom has ended.

It’s easy to forget, in the strife and pain that life sometimes brings us, that this life is not all there is. In Ecclesiastes 3:1–8, King Solomon muses on the passing of time; things have seasons, and life is not static. It would be easy to settle into a sense of hopelessness reading these famous lines. However, Solomon’s point is not to highlight hopelessness, but to assure us that, with God in ultimate control of who we are and what we do, our focus shifts to the glory of the eternity promised to us in and through Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul tells us not to look at the troubles we have now, but rather to look beyond them, gazing at the things that aren’t seen, in faith, knowing that now will soon be gone, and what God has promised will last forever.

Lord, grant me the ability to see with my heart the things that are eternal, to look past the now, into the glory of eternity spent with you.
