Journey to EasterНамуна

Good Friday
The Gospels record seven final statements Jesus made while hanging on the cross. Luke 23 gives us three of His statements that were spoken in the moment but have wonderfully resonated forward into the future. They are powerful reminders today of who Jesus was, and is, and what He achieved for all humanity.
‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing’ (v34). Jesus is showing us that forgiveness is available to all. Despite the horrible pain, mocking, utter disrespect and spiteful hatred that the authorities and masses where inflicting on Him, Jesus reminds us that no one is beyond the perfect mercy and forgiveness of God.
‘Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise’ (v43). As one thief ridiculed and turned away from Him, the other turned to Him receiving the salvation that Jesus freely offers. God gave us a free will. Accepting or rejecting salvation is a choice we all must make. Deny and ignore, or accept and receive.
‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit’ (v46). These final words are the final victory. Like Jesus, we will leave our mortal bodies and pass into eternity. Jesus knew that He was going to His Father who was ready to take Him into His loving arms. Because of what Jesus did for us, we can have that assurance as well.
Good Friday. What a perfect day to reflect and meditate on these three vital and life-changing themes of the Easter story. Forgiveness, salvation and eternity.
