Losing the Joy
When we sin, we do not lose our salvation, we lose the joy of our salvation. (Psalm 51:12 actually says “Your salvation”—salvation belongs to the Lord. If it were in our hands, we could lose it, but since it’s in God’s hands, it is eternally secure.)
Remember how joyful you were when you first came to Christ? The celebration that a soul has been reconnected with its Maker produces an unfathomable joy! I know a man who was thought to have “lost his marbles” when he first became a Christian because he couldn’t stop smiling. We sometimes overlook what the angel proclaimed to the shepherds: “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people” (Luke 2:10). To be saved by Christ Jesus is the happiest fact the human heart can know.
But sadly, we like David probably know what it is to have that joy fade, to watch it disintegrate into thin air. When we live in sin and lack repentance, we break fellowship with God and we lose the blessed joy we once knew. How do we get it back? We confess our sins like David did; we truly turn from it and ask God to restore the joy of His salvation. No one but God can give you back this joy, so wait upon the Lord until He hears your cries.
