Seeing What’s Going On Behind the Scenes
“Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So, the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6:17)
With our five senses, we can see, hear, smell, touch, and taste what’s happening around us. But we can’t sense magnetic fields (as sea turtles and butterflies can) or electric fields (as sharks can). Neither can we see angels or demons. Many people, therefore, find it difficult to believe that these supernatural beings exist. Maybe this goes for you as well?
However, magnetic fields can be made visible to us by using a compass. If we have ever seen this, it’s easier for us to imagine that magnetic fields are around us all the time, even when we don’t have a compass on hand.
Today’s story tells us that the Lord God opened the eyes of Elisha’s servant to see a heavenly army that had come to protect them from the Syrian soldiers. The Bible contains several more stories about angelic beings sent by the Lord God to protect believers or to carry out certain tasks on earth. Most of the time, people don’t notice them. Sometimes they do. But even when our five senses fall short of noticing what happens around us, we know that God is there and His heavenly army is real, for we have eyewitness accounts in the Bible.
Do you believe that angels are real and that they are around us?
