I love the verses in the Bible that provide visions. They are just cool! I have always wanted to experience receiving this grand dream-like vision from God and then have it interpreted to lead me towards some great destiny; haven’t you? But, if God was going to just interpret the dreams to Daniel, why not just tell him outright in the first place? Why go through the process of providing a vision? That just doesn’t seem practical. There seems like there is a more direct way. Especially in our age of email, text, and instant communication, this seems to be a poor choice in communicating a vision, right?
Well, I believe God isn’t simply interested in giving us directions like a boring memo sent through email. God’s goal isn’t interested in simply commanding us through a “reply all” email. He desires to inspire us, capture our attention, motivate us to invest in His vision and share the excitement He has for us. Therefore, He communicates His vision through creative ways. Signs, wonders, and visions (to name a few).
We must always remember, God is a creator, an artist, a poet. Forgive me while I trail off into poetic admiration for a moment, but I can recall times in which I stare at a group of trees, a field of flowers, or the sky above and spend long moments simply basking in the complexity and wonderment of God’s creative hand. Beauty in nature is not always practical, and our ability to comprehend beauty is not practical. Yet, we see beauty in God’s creation because He wishes to inspire us, capture our attention, and motivate us to see His hand in the world around us. He wishes to communicate to us: “You are a part of this.” We are a part of His creation. His vision. A part of Him.
