Joy in the journey
The apostle Paul probably wrote the book of Philippians while imprisoned in Rome. Paul wanted to thank the people of Philippi for the help they had sent him and encourage them to stand firm in their faith. Paul was confident in his calling and believed the Lord had brought him to Rome for a Kingdom purpose. But Paul continued to care about, and minister to the various churches his ministry had helped establish. The city of Philippi was a prosperous Roman colony and heavily populated with Roman officials. The early Christians in the Philippian church had an uphill battle if they were going to influence their culture. Paul’s letter expresses his understanding of their mission but encourages them to find joy in their circumstances because God would honor and bless their ministry.
