Fasting for a Greater Release of Power
The disciples faced disappointment in their ministry. Jesus had sent them out and empowered them to cast out unclean spirits and heal the sick. But when a father brought his son to them for healing from demon possession, they could not set him free. The man then approached Jesus with his son, and Jesus cast the evil spirit out. Later the disciples asked Jesus why they weren’t able to cast the demon out. Jesus shared a key with them: it was because of their lack of faith, and this kind of demon would only come out through prayer and fasting.
This demon was strong. He had terrorized the child from a young age, given him seizures, and caused him to fall into the fire and water. But even though the demon was strong, Christ was stronger! The kind of faith the disciples needed to cast this demon out was only accessible to those with a very close relationship with the Father. And that kind of relationship was only possible through a lifestyle of prayer and fasting. Andrew Murray once said, “Prayer is the one hand with which we grasp the invisible. Fasting is the other hand, the one with which we let go of the visible.”
If you desire a greater power in your spiritual life, you need greater faith. And greater faith comes through prayer and fasting. If you have the faith of a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for you! Lay hold of it through fasting and prayer!
