Mark: Living the Way of Jesus in the WorldНамуна

First Thought
Mark’s Gospel opens in the wilderness with the dramatic figure of John the Baptist. Centuries earlier, God had rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Through subsequent years in the wilderness, He’d invited them to trust in His presence, His protection, and His provision. They never managed to fully do so nor to truly fulfill their destiny as a light to the nations. For generations, Jews lived with the hope that one day God would redeem them and restore them fully as His people. Now here was John, a prophet and messenger, declaring that this long-awaited day had now come; God was returning to dwell among His people as King.
