Day 22 — Stir Up What's Within You

God never assigns a calling without providing the tools to fulfill it. Every time He calls us to do something, He has already planted within us the potential to accomplish it, even if we have not yet recognized it.

The design God has planned for us is revealed in the passions, gifts, and talents He has placed within us—all that we are naturally inclined to do, long to do, or feel compelled to pursue. However, the gifts entrusted to us do not grow automatically.

Sometimes there are talents within you that you do not yet know you have, gifts that have not yet been revealed, simply because they have not been developed and activated.

These are gifts that require our active cooperation. Scripture not only says that we have unique gifts, but that we also must stir them up: “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6, NIV). The word “fan into flame” brings to mind the image of fire: our gifts begin like a small spark but require intentional effort to grow into a burning flame.

This means actively cultivating the abilities and passions within us, and using them to create impact within our sphere of influence.

So, how can we cultivate our gifting in a practical way?

  • Recognize your gifts: Take time to reflect and respond to these two questions: “What am I passionate about?” and “What is a gifted skill I possess?” This practice can be initiated by creating a short list, but prioritize the items to what motivates and drives you the most.
  • Develop them through practice: Like a muscle in your body, your gifts become stronger when exercised. Look for opportunities at the office, home, or in church to put these passions and skills to work. Remember, God often calls us to step outside our comfort zones and take bold steps of faith in order to activate our true gifting and purpose. An uncomfortable step of faith that aligns your passion with a personal skill, is normally a good sign that you are heading in the right direction!
  • Seek God’s guidance: Pray for wisdom in stewarding your gifts well. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to use them in ways that honor God and bless others.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the gifts and talents You have placed within me with a specific purpose. Help me to recognize them and not leave them unused out of fear or insecurity. Give me the courage to exercise them in faith, to develop them with dedication, and to put them at the service of Your Kingdom. Amen.
