Churches Delegating Leaders for Service

Do you have a healthy balance in how you serve your local church?

The sport movement is made up of many para-church groups that serve specific types of athletes, along with a wide variety of other sports-related opportunities. Interestingly, sports para-church organizations are a relatively recent development — and today, there are hundreds of them!

In my early years, I helped establish several para-church sports organizations while remaining active in my local church. Although my pastor wasn’t particularly passionate about sport, he cared deeply about the congregation’s involvement in missions. We had many conversations with church leadership about how to engage the congregation through sport. We had to find common ground — a shared mission. Sport gave the church a tangible mission field.

My local church ended up sending more than 20 members to serve at two global sports conferences. Others with writing and editing skills volunteered to compile and distribute sport movement information.

Do you or your sports facilitation team or organization actively serve your church or the churches of your staff and volunteers? If not, why not? Do you keep your church leadership informed? Do you seek ways for members to serve through your sports ministry and invite spiritual covering?

Scripture to PonderHebrews 13:17 (NIV)

“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.”

Key Lesson:

Stay positively engaged with your local church. Find common goals, and look for ways to support their mission. Your sports ministry can be a powerful tool within the church — not just alongside it.
